Looking for jobs that are on the cutting edge? Canada’s directory of job titles, known as the National Occupation Codes (NOC), is being updated for 2011. It will include a range of new professions. This reflects the changing nature of our workplace and technology.

Until then, here are some of the newest types of positions being hired for. 

Green (Environmental) Employment

You might be surprised to learn that nearly 700,000 workers in Canada spend 50% or more of their time on environmental activities at work. These “Environmental Employees” are found most frequently in the following industries:

  • Education/Health/Social Assistance: 122,000
  • Wholesale/Retail Trade: 93,000
  • Construction: 89,000
  • Manufacturing: 72,000


Green jobs run the gamut from highly technical to the more generalized. A few examples follow.

Wind Turbine Technician l

The Technician I uses their technical skills and training to perform maintenance and/or installation work on assigned wind turbines at a basic level. The Technician follows specific schedules and procedures including safety protocol, and turbine service or installation processes.

This is regarded as the “entry-level” team member on the technician team and will have minimal customer interface. It would be helpful to have some related experience and a diploma in a related mechanical discipline. In terms of pay, you can expect to earn about $17.00 - $22.50 per hour. Annual salaries might be around $40,000 - $50,000.

Environmental Compliance Specialist

Conducts required environmental tests, analysis and observations. Evaluates results and makes recommendations as necessary for maintaining compliance with regulatory agencies. Works under general supervision; typically reports to a supervisor or manager.

Requires a bachelor's degree in a related area and 2-4 years of experience in the field or related area. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures. In terms of pay, you can expect to earn an annual salary of around $56,000 – $81,000.


Healthcare

The healthcare and social assistance sectors in Canada employ more than 2,000,000 Canadians collectively. New kinds of jobs are cropping up because some of the most effective technology used by healthcare practitioners didn’t even exist until recently. Nursing Informatics Analyst

Responsible for supporting clinical documentation processes and applications. Requires strong analytical and facilitator skills to identify documentation requirements and design documentation systems to support best practice guidelines in patient care processes and work flow. Oversees training and support for documentation compliance; implementation and coordination of workflow and upgrade improvements to the clinical documentation system.

A Bachelor's degree in Nursing or RN with advanced training in Informatics systems is required.
Pay varies from $48,000 to $65,000 annually.

MRI Technician

Performs diagnostic Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans for the diagnosis and tracking of disease and pathology. May assist in interpretation of results. Participates in consultations with medical staff.

Requires Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technology diploma. Also drug administration and intravenous injection training, where specified. Certified as an MRI Technologist by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists. Rate of pay is $33 to $39 per hour.


Business / Information Technology

While green technology and healthcare equipment have become futuristic, jobs in business aren’t exactly boring. The Web continues to churn out new employment opportunities. But it also poses security threats to a business, so naturally jobs in Information Technology security are in demand.

Web Content Writer / Social Media Coordinator

Do you have a strong web content writing background? Your mission is to develop, coordinate and execute creative, timely and successful web content and social media communications for all of our websites and social media outlets that enables our company to share promotions, sales, and provide support to its customers.

It is essential to have a Bachelors Degree in Communication, Journalism, English or related field, and a minimum 2 years experience writing, proofing and editing web content. Decent understanding of the Internet and Search Engines. Proven success in social media strategy and management of social web technologies such as Facebook and Twitter. Rate of pay is $34,000 to $57,000 annually.

Data Security Analyst I

Maintains computer and integrated systems to protect data from unauthorized users or other threats. Identifies, reports, and resolves security violations. Prevents fraud and cyber attack by using cyber threat intelligence to use countermeasures within the firm’s IT environment.

May require a bachelor's degree or college diploma in area of specialty and 0-2 years of experience in the field or related area. This type of job generally pays between $44,000 – $60,000 annually.
