Cineplex Entertainment is one of the largest entertainment companies in Canada. It has a presence in all 10 Canadian provinces with more than 160 movie theatres and more than 20 XScape game arcades. It is also responsible for Canada’s largest entertainment loyalty program, SCENE.
The first Cineplex movie theatre opened in Toronto in 1979. The company known as Galaxy Entertainment Inc., Cineplex Entertainment’s former name, was formed in 1999 by former Cineplex movie executives. It looked to bring high-tech entertainment options to small Canadian markets traditionally serviced by small theatres using outdated equipment.
The firm acquired Loews Cineplex Entertainment, a merger of Cineplex Odeon and Sony’s Loews Theatres, in 2003. In 2005, it purchased Famous Players. Later that year, the company took its current name, Cineplex Entertainment.
Cineplex Entertainment employs more than 10,000 people across Canada. It posts annual revenues of more than C$1 billion.
