The Slavey language translation of Norman Wells' name means "where there is oil." Considering the history and current oil- and gas-driven economy of Norman Wells, Northwest Territories (NWT), that moniker is most appropriate. Home to just over 700 people, Norman Wells is one of the five communities that compose the Sahtu Region.

Norman Wells has the NWT's only producing oil field. The area exports about C$500 million a year through the Norman Wells to Zama Lake Pipeline. In addition to serving as the NWT's administrative and commercial centre, Normal Wells has the highest average income level in the NWT.

In the future, Normal Wells efforts to develop hydroelectric power through the Great Bear River will likely lead to significant employment growth in the sector.
