North Bay, Ontario Overview

The seat of the Nipissing District, North Bay is one of the most economically diverse communities in Northern Ontario. North Bay has enjoyed a rise to creative prominence as an arts and culture centre thanks to its vibrant community of actors, writers, musicians, and artists. This has resulted in the city frequently serving as the main filming location for a variety of mini-series and movies, including the 2013 film "The Colony."

With two post-secondary institutions – Nipissing University and Canadore College – and The Algonquin Regiment army reserve unit, the city sees a broad influx of talents and skills that contribute to its economic diversity, making it a great place to live and work.

North Bay Job Opportunities

A large percentage of North Bay's available jobs are in the public sector. In fact, the city's top employers are in government, education and health care, although the service industry also plays a significant role in the city's economy. Other major employment opportunities exist in the tourism and transportation industries.

North Bay also boasts a diversified industrial service and manufacturing industry. Industries here focus on high-margin, small-volume global markets and serve a broad customer base that includes the I.T., transportation, construction, telecom and resource sectors.

The city's professional service sector is also quite broad, employing professionals in the engineering, education, legal, finance, health and security fields.

North Bay Employment Trends

According to the numbers, North Bay has been weathering necessary job cuts. Its unemployment rate fell to below six percent in early 2015, which is good news overall. Job losses, however, have continued to occur at Nipissing University and North Bay Regional Health Centre, with further losses expected in the city's retail sector. Administrative positions have also been cut in an attempt to reduce North Bay's C$11.8-million deficit. Despite this discouraging development, job creation remains the city's top priority.
