Dental Hygienist Job Overview

Becoming a dentist requires years of post-graduate training. Since many people who wish to pursue careers in dental hygiene do not want to spend the money and time it takes to become a dentist, they may choose to start careers as dental hygienists. Dental hygienists perform several important tasks, such as cleaning teeth, taking X-rays, recording medical information and teaching patients how to prevent diseases.

Dental Hygienist Job Education Requirements

Dental hygienists must complete college programs specifically designed for the profession. Classes provide training in subjects like:

  • Dental hygiene theory and practice
  • Managing pain and anxiety
  • Dental materials
  • Disease prevention

Students must pass an exam administer by the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board before they can begin working with patients. The exam includes written and clinical tests.

Dental Hygienist Job Market

Researchers believe that the job market for dental hygienists will continue to grow at a faster than average rate. This should mean that students and recent graduates have plenty of opportunities to start their careers.

Those who wish to expand their employment opportunities may want to search for dental assistant jobs in their areas. This position is also expected to grow quickly over the next decade.
