Executive Chef Job Overview

An executive chef, or head chef, is in charge of the kitchen at a restaurant, hotel, catering company or any other location where they serve food. Since everything that comes out of the kitchen essentially has the executive chef's stamp of approval, it is important for this individual to stay involved in every step of the preparation and cooking process. Those in this role should be able to command the respect of other kitchen staff members, such as culinary assistants, apprentices, and chefs. An executive chef must also have good hygiene practices to ensure that all food meets quality standards.

Executive Chef Job Education Requirements

Most executive chef jobs involve training at a culinary school to learn more about the art of cooking. After completing a culinary education program, most new graduates will not be able to find executive chef jobs right away. Instead, they will start working in a kitchen to gain experience and understand how to work quickly and efficiently to meet deadlines. After proving themselves in an assistant or sous chef capacity, candidates might then be able to move up and become executive chefs. It often takes a lot of time and work to become a head chef.

Executive Chef Job Market

The most common workplaces for executive chefs include restaurants, travel companies and catering services. The job market is increasing, but on a slower basis. Many restaurants are still feeling the impact of the difficult financial times, and while the economy is slowly improving, they might rely more on their junior staff members to save money. Another similar career path is to work as a bartender, which can provide more stable job opportunities.
