Food Service Job Education Requirements

Jobs within the food service industry require a range of skills, education and experience, and the type of job will determine what of these attributes employers look for. In entry level food service jobs, for example, education and experience are less important, with jobs such as waitressing and food preparation being more reliant on on-the-job training. Whilst these jobs don't require much education and experience, there are certain skills that employers look for that make a good employee. In the food service industry, there are many jobs that involve interacting with the public, and therefore skills such as communication and listening are important.

This increase in demand has mainly been in the fast food industry, rather than up-market restaurants.In the food service industry, job creation in the same period has mainly benefited chefs, cooks and servers with upward trends also for food service supervisors and food counter attendants. Some of these top jobs also come under the hospitality sector of work, which includes clerks and hostesses.

Food Service Job Salary Information

For people working in a kitchen, the pay ranges from $9.95 to $20 per hour for cooks and between $9.95 and $30 per hour for chefs. The average food worker earns about $12.26 per hour, however. An example of a manager's salary in food and beverage is $45,175, and an assistant manager in fast food can expect $30,810 a year on average.
