Lab Assistant Job Overview

Lab assistants may work in either medical or science facilities. Their responsibilities typically include routine tasks. Medical laboratory assistants may greet and direct patients, collect and process blood and urine specimens, enter data, and maintain medical equipment. Scientific lab assistants typically carry out daily sampling and testing associated with ongoing experiments and record data. They are also responsible for cleaning and maintaining lab equipment and stocking supplies in the facility.

Lab assistants' responsibilities may vary by facility as well as by project. In a scientific lab, the experiments may change regularly.Medical lab assistants will face different challenges with each patient. Attention to detail and an analytical attitude are essential in this occupation. Medical assistants work directly with patients and must be personable with good communication skills.

Lab Assistant Job Education Requirements

Most lab assistants need an associate's degree for this line of work. Some positions are available for applicants with a high school diploma or GED. Some medical positions may require additional certification.

A Diploma of College Studies in biomedical analysis technology is required for most medical lab technicians. Candidates who complete the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science certification (CSMLS) will increase their employability, as this examination allows them to work as a medical lab assistant anywhere in Canada.

Most applicants don't plan to remain in lab assistant jobs long, making this an ideal job for those who are currently pursuing a higher degree.

The outlook for lab assistant jobs is good. Openings for medical lab assistants in particular are expected to increase in coming years. There's a growing demand for diagnostic tests among the aging population. This creates a growing need for lab assistants and technologists who can help collect and process these tests.

The median annual salary for lab assistant I jobs in Canada is C$48,802. Those in the top 10 percent earn more than C$60,141 while those in the bottom 10 percent make less than C$38,110. As lab assistants advance, their salary increases accordingly. The median base salary for lab assistant II positions is C$57,185 and the lab assistant III title comes with a median annual salary of C$61,899. Laboratory managers make C$79,735 on average.
