Library assistants handle the day-to-day tasks involved in running a public library. Under the supervision of a librarian, library assistants organise books and periodicals, interact with customers, and maintain reference materials. The majority of library assistant positions are government jobs offering higher than average salary and job security. Library assistants, also known as library technicians, enjoy a comfortable work environment. Some tasks those in library assistant jobs might perform on a daily basis include:

  • Processing library loans to patrons and checking in returned materials
  • Completing interlibrary loans for books and reference materials

Library Assistant Job Education Requirements

Most library assistants have completed a diploma of collegial studies (DCS) in a field of study such as documentation techniques. Membership in ASTED, Canada's professional association for documentation specialists, is considered an advantage in securing employment in this field. Education and training in computer database programs is also a useful credential.
