A millwright works with and erects different types of machinery. This might include installing machinery on a foundation and levelling and aligning electric motors of machines. Similar career options might include working as a machinist or a mechanic, although they tend to do more of the repair work. Millwrights also work with steel and other types of metal when handling industrial equipment and machines. Most millwrights will work directly with other trained professionals, such as electricians, pipefitters, welders,construction workers and instrument technicians.

Millwright Job Education Requirements

There are apprenticeship and journeyman educational programs available to those with an interest in working in the millwright industry. Some programs can last up to four years, which might also require 6,000 or more workplace hours to finish the program. Other millwrights receive on-the-job training and won't need formal education, although this is becoming rarer. Those who have received training and education to work in the millwright field can typically earn a higher starting salary, since they come with more knowledge and experience. Courses often cover learning to read blueprints, wiring, welding and alignment.
