Personal Shopper Job Overview

If you have an amazing sense of style, superior interpersonal skills, a background in fashion buying or retail sales, and an outgoing, entrepreneurial personality, a career as a personal shopper may be a perfect fit for you. Personal shoppers, sometimes called stylists or image consultants, can be employees of upscale department stores or personal shopping businesses, or they can be self-employed consultants who manage their own clientele. Some personal shoppers conduct shopping tours for out-of-town guests.

While there is no such thing as a "typical" personal shopper, most personal shoppers perform at least a few of these tasks on a regular basis:

  • Meeting with clients to assess their personality, fashion preferences, and shopping needs
  • Cultivating relationships with vendors and suppliers to establish favourable purchasing terms
  • Shopping for and purchase clothes and accessories for clients
  • Evaluating clients' existing wardrobes and make purchasing suggestions
  • Accompanying clients on shopping excursions and recommending purchases
  • Keeping accurate records for invoicing and accounting purposes

Personal Shopper Job Education Requirements

There are no formal education requirements in Canada for personal shopper jobs. Most personal shoppers have a high school diploma or equivalent at a minimum; many have post-secondary vocational training in fashion or retail sales.

As more women enter the workforce on a full-time basis and achieve executive status, the demand for stylists and personal shoppers grows exponentially. In addition, upscale retailers, facing increased competition, are increasingly adding services, such as personal shoppers and image consultants, as a perk to attract and retain good customers.
