A personal support worker provides psychological and social assistance, as well as physical support, to someone who is medically challenged or elderly. This health care professional provides personal care to those who are staying in homes or living on their own. They must have empathy and know how to show respect and care. Because people who have illnesses often have an especially strong need to be heard and understood, the personal support worker must try to communicate and acknowledge the patient at all times. Sometimes they will even need to plan and prepare nutritious meals for the individual.

Personal Support Worker Job Education Requirements

In order to be a personal support worker, you need to have a high school diploma and be a graduate from a personal support worker program. Alternatively, you can complete a provincial equivalent certificate program with a minimum of 500 hours. In addition to these basics, the personal support worker should have well-honed time management, organizational, communication, focus and interpersonal skills. They must also achieve First Aid certification as well as Cardiac Life Support accreditation. Some personal support workers will continue their training to become a social worker, nurse, caseworker or other social work or healthcare professional.

Personal support workers can expect to earn around C$16 per hour at a minimum, while more experienced personal care workers can earn well beyond that. In lieu of an hourly rate, some personal support workers are hired with a salary that would start around C$30,000, although the salary may go up as well. The best way to earn a strong salary in this position is to stay with the same organization for a long time and get as high an education as possible.
