Pharmacist Job Overview

A pharmacist fills prescriptions of medications for patients. In doing so, the pharmacist must carefully verify the instructions from the doctor regarding the types and amounts of medications to dispense. Pharmacists also frequently advise patients on how to safely take their medications. Pharmacists also give advice on health-related topics, and many provide immunizations as well, most commonly for the flu vaccine. These medical professionals help their patients complete insurance forms and other paperwork as needed. Pharmacists will be frequently communicating with doctors and nurses.

Pharmacist Job Education Requirements

Aspiring pharmacists must earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, which takes around four years to complete. In order to prepare for the strict program that leads to this degree, students should take classes in anatomy, science, biology, and chemistry, among other sciences. It's also important to excel in academics in order to get into the top pharmacy programs.

In fact, it is expected to grow nearly 15 percent in the next decade. With increasing numbers of chronic diseases such as diabetes, pharmacists are needed at an increasing rate.

Pharmacists can expect to earn an average of around C$135,000 per year. Some may earn considerably more, depending on the company as well as the pharmacist's education and experience. Pharmacists who are just starting out may earn less, and they may be paid by either an hourly wage or yearly salary. The higher earning pharmacists are usually ones who have a long history with the company and a high level of education.
