Public Sector Job Overview

Public sector jobs are enormously diverse, ranging from librarians to joining your local police or working in an environmental health capacity. Some jobs are unique to the public sector, whereas other careers can be pursued interchangeably between the public and private sector. A key characteristic of a public sector job is that the employer is a government agency of some type, rather than a commercial company or charity. Typically, public sector jobs have generous terms of service, often including paid sick leave, an occupational health scheme, attractive pension option and other local benefits such as access to discounted goods and services. Part-time and full-time positions are usually available.

Public Sector Job Education Requirements

The qualifications required for public sector positions depend largely on the nature of the job under consideration. Usually candidates are expected to have a good general level of education with further professional qualifications and/or a relevant graduate qualification. For example, a nurse will need the right professional qualification as well as appropriate experience to be considered for a public sector nursing job. Candidates with good transferable skills, for example administrators or other office workers, can frequently move from the private into the public sector or vice versa. As the majority of public sector posts involve working with the general public in some capacity, having strong interpersonal and people skills are significant advantages.

Public Sector Job Market

The demand for public sector employees varies depending on the nature of the job under consideration. Many public sector occupations such as teaching, food preparation and administration employment are in sectors where demand for workers is predicted to increase. Conversely, relevant statistics suggest that demand for switch board operators and mail room workers will decrease over the next few years, meaning job vacancies will decline in both the public and private sectors.
