Public Service Job Overview

There are many different job opportunities to choose from in the public service sector. Some people choose a career in teaching or working in a library while others work in public transportation, government or first response. Basically, any career that offers a service and/or assistance to members of a community fits under the public service career umbrella. The Public Service Commission of Canada offers job opportunities to people all throughout the country.

Public Service Job Education Requirements

The education requirements for a career in public service will depend on the actual job in question. For example, a police officer might have to complete a program at a police academy or a firefighter must finish a similar program at a fire academy. Candidates with an interest in political involvement may want to seek education in political sciences, law or other similar fields to understand the governmental system in Canada. Some public service jobs that work with others, such as caregivers or nannies, might not require formal education, while nurses or other healthcare personnel need training and certifications.

Public Service Job Market

According to recent data, the public service job market is on the rise by approximately 16 percent throughout Canada. Since there is such a high need for educators, healthcare workers, first responders and law enforcement officers, these jobs tend to have plenty of openings for those who want to work in this industry.

Public Service Job Salary Information

Similar to the education requirements, the salary for public service jobs will depend on the position. Nannies and caregivers earn an average hourly rate between C$12 and C$20. Police officers in Canada earn some of the highest wages among those working in similar positions around the world, coming in at an average of C$80,000 to $90,000 per year. Those working in public service can also qualify for excellent benefits and pension packages.
