All manufacturing and production systems need to be reviewed by a quality engineering professional to make sure that manufactured products are in compliance with performance specifications and maintain consistent quality standards. Most quality engineer jobs are in manufacturing, but they can also be in other sectors, such as software development. Some daily tasks common to quality engineers might include:
Collaborate with customers and engineering staff to determine performance specifications for manufactured items
Develop standards and documentation for new product launches
Inspect and test manufactured products to ensure they meet quality standards
Coordinate with materials suppliers to develop cost-effective supply chains of raw materials
Perform process and capability studies on existing processes and identify areas for improvement; make recommendations for process change to address deficiencies
Identify problems, evaluate solutions, and implement corrective action
Prepare statistical analysis on processes and products and write reports for other department heads
Develop an internal quality audit program and train test analysts and other quality staff to carry out independent audit processes
Supervise the activities of QA technicians and other departmental staff
Monitor production activities for compliance with all federal, provincial and territorial regulations
Quality Engineer Job Education Requirements
Quality engineers need a four-year university degree in engineering, preferably in mechanical or manufacturing engineering. Many secure an advanced degree, as well. Most quality engineer jobs also require several years in a manufacturing engineering job before advancing into the role of quality engineer. The engineering profession is strictly regulated in Canada and professional engineers must be licensed by the provincial or territorial governing body where they are employed. Quality engineers are expected to achieve designation as a Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) by the American Society for Quality (ASQ).
Quality Engineer Job Market
The job market for quality engineers is fair to above average. Engineering jobs in general have a fairly consistent level of demand in the Canadian economy and growth is expected to be in the 0.8 to 1.2 percent per year range. Certified quality engineers have a better chance of securing employment in the field.
