Registered Nurse Jobs Overview

Nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system and perform a critical role in society. They provide care, comfort, and support to patients suffering from chronic, acute physical, and mental health conditions. A registered nurse (RN) is a healthcare professional who has a nursing license and has been through rigorous training. Those working in registered nurse jobs work closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals and play a significant part in coordinating and planning a patient's care. If you are compassionate, enjoy working with others, and excel in a fast-paced environment, a job in nursing could be the perfect match for you.

Demand for registered nurses in Canada is increasing steadily, which means it's a great time to begin your job search. With plenty of prospects for professional development, a career in nursing can offer you a fulfilling and well-paid opportunity in the healthcare sector. With experience and training, you could move into specialized roles such as oncology, pediatrics, surgery, or critical care. You could also work in healthcare administration or health policy. With further education, you can become a Nurse Practitioner or researcher.

In this role, you'll usually work as part of a multidisciplinary team with other healthcare professionals, such as therapists, doctors, and nursing staff. Typical nursing job duties may include:

As a full-time registered nurse, you'll work on average 36-40 hours per week. You'll generally work 8-12-hour shifts, usually on rotation, and you may have to work weekends, evenings, and holidays. You could be employed in various settings, including hospitals, clinics, doctor's offices, schools, residential care facilities, private homes, or community agencies.
