Creative Careers Overview

Creative careers in Canada cover a range of employment types, but some examples include:

  • Writers
  • Graphic Designers
  • Photographers
  • Producers
  • Musicians

If you're someone who has a visionary spirit and wants to create enduring material, a creative career might be for you. One of the potential perks of this kind of employment is that it's often performed on a per-project basis. That scenario might work well if you don't like adhering to a set schedule, or you find that you're best able to get work done at odd hours.

Creative Career Education

Many people who pursue creative design jobs do so after earning university degrees or finishing certificate training programs. Some of them also feel it's worthwhile to participate in internships or do work for free to build up portfolios. Besides getting educated in a particular creative field, people following this career path may take basic accounting or management classes, especially if they intend to be self-employed. In the fields of music and photography, people are often self-taught, but the ones who are able to sustain long-term livelihoods are usually people who work proactively to improve their skills by attending master classes and workshops with notable artists.

Creative Career Job Markets

Job prospects for people in creative careers vary due to many factors, including talent, managerial and administrative skills, networking abilities, and even luck. However, analysts believe that in Ontario, the job market for graphic designers will be good, especially if applicants embrace new forms of media and show a willingness to fit and adapt to changing trends. Another way a person in any type of creative career can stand out from competitors is to fill a need that is not being met within a particular province. Writers may fare well in Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, and Manitoba, because those three provinces have good employment outlooks for people who make their income writing.

Creative Career Salaries

The average hourly wage for graphic designers and musicians in Canada is C$20.00, while performing arts producers can earn an average of C$26.67. The median salary for photographers in Canada is unfortunately lower than for the job titles above, at just C$15.00 per hour. However, if you're able to fill a specialty position by working as a wedding or sports photographer, that may allow you to earn more hourly for special events. Writers earn wages that are higher than any of the above jobs, commanding a median salary of C$26.92.
