IT Careers Overview

Your love of technology could turn into a promising new job once you decide to look for Information Technology (IT) careers in your province. Although some IT specialists are self-employed, you might also find a position working as an IT consultant for a well-known firm in the public or private sector. Some IT careers focus on specific things like security systems, quality assurance, or developing new ways to help businesses succeed.

IT Career Education

Employers usually require candidates to hold bachelor's degrees in subjects such as software engineering, business administration, or computer systems engineering. Experience as a computer programmer helps too, especially if you're trying to secure a competitive position and know the applicant pool is very large. If a position requires proficiency with a particular brand of software, you might need to be certified or trained by respective vendors, especially when updated versions or security patches are released. However, it's not necessary to receive a license before accepting an IT position or working in the field, because IT careers are non-regulatory positions in Canada.

IT Career Job Market

There have been many fluctuations in IT job opportunities over the past several years. Data shows strong growth from 2008-2010, and the unemployment rate for IT jobs in 2010 stayed below 5 percent. However, analysts say that could change through 2020. It's believed the number of job seekers will outweigh available positions. Although other positions characteristically see job opportunities arise because workers go into retirement, that's less common in the IT industry since most of its workers are younger than average.

On a positive note, computer technology is an essential part of Canada's information-dependent economy. Some companies are using remote technology to outsource work, and highly skilled immigrants are taking work that might otherwise go to the country's citizens. Because of those factors, experts predict a surplus of workers who have IT skills and knowledge.

IT Career Salaries

Throughout Canada, the median hourly wage for IT workers is C$35.38 per hour. Workers in the Yukon Territory characteristically earn less than that, or C$27.90 per hour. The highest average wage is in Alberta, where qualified workers may earn C$38.94 per hour. If you're serious about finding a job that combines earning potential with overall satisfaction, consider taking a position in a province where the average wage is consistently high. Otherwise, do what you can to enrich your education and stay competitive.
