Retail Careers Overview

Retail Careers Overview

Retail stores play an important role in the overall growth and stability of the economy. Retail careers are a great option for candidates who don’t have a lot of education. There are also management jobs for those with education and/or experience in managing staff. Working as a cashier in retail store requires good customer service skills and the ability to work quickly and efficiently under pressure when the store gets busy. Retail store managers will handle employee and personnel issues, manage a schedule and staff shifts appropriately and analyze sales to predict future growth and staffing needs.

Retail Career Education

Entry-level retail careers, such as stocking, cashiering and greeting, typically will require completion of secondary school or high school. Management jobs might require a university degree, or employers might simply require five or more years of experience in managing employees. Those who want to go into retail might want to take some educational courses in communications or math, since both of these skills are important in ringing up customers, talking to people in the store and preparing bank deposits. Education in business, management, and finance will also be helpful for retail store managers.

Retail Career Job Market

According to statistics, retail jobs should grow at the standard rate of about 10 percent in the next decade. The turnover rate for retail sales positions is quite high, which means that there are often open positions at stores throughout the country. Retail store manager jobs may not grow as quickly, since these positions typically have lower rates of turnover and there are fewer positions available within a store. The education and experience requirements for retail managers are also higher, so this weeds out applicants and provides more opportunities for those who do have the necessary experience and management knowledge.

Retail Career Salaries

The average hourly pay rate for an entry-level retail sales worker is between C$9.40 and C$14.25. The city in which the employee works plays a role in the starting pay rate, as does the experience level of the candidate. Retail store managers earn a median salary of C$41,262. Since these positions are generally paid a salary instead of an hourly rate, they are often eligible to receive bonuses based on the performance of the store location. Some companies also offer additional profit-sharing and commission pay to those who manage stores throughout Canada.
